Calendar Activities
Not your everyday calendar, here you can find important events in literary history, authors' birthdays, and a variety of holidays, all with related activities and resources that make them more relevant to students. View by day, by week, or by month.

July 25 - 31, 2010

Jan Berenstain, co-author of the popular Berenstain Bears series of books, was born in 1923.
Teachers create "Book Kits" for students to help promote family literacy. Berenstain Bears books are included in these "book kits" which also include nonfiction books on the same subject, home activities, reproducibles, and parent information.
Grades K – 2
Author of Tuck Everlasting, Natalie Babbitt, was born in 1932.
Students research the concept of immortality from beliefs around the world and compose a short story, myth, or poem that addresses immortality.
Grades 9 – 12
Paperback books were first introduced in 1935.
Independent reading is promoted among students by organizing a paperback book swap in the classroom or with other classes at the same grade level.
Grades 3 – 8
J.K. Rowling and her Harry Potter celebrate birthdays today.
Students are encouraged to think about why people challenge Harry Potter books, do a Web Quest that allows them to research the issue, and decide whether the books should be banned from the public library.
