Tonya is an assistant professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Her primary interests center around teaching middle and high school students in English language arts. Connected to this primary interest, she conducts research in the area of writing in the secondary schools and engaging 21st century learners in the classroom using technology and strategic instructional strategies. She is the Director and Principal Investigator for the Red Mountain Writing Project and served on the NCTE Conference on English Education Executive Board. Tonya was a state teacher of the year and a finalist for national teacher of the year in 2000.
